Margiela x Damiani

without comments

Martin Margiela collaborated with legendary Italian jewelers Damiani to create these stunning pieces. I love the idea of taking traditional images of jewelry and playing with size to alter their wearability. The ring shape blown up to a bracelet, or the classic studded earring blown up into a necklace charm. Anything that Margiela touches turn to gold, he can do no bad.

Day 2 on Covertible Shoes : “Goodie 2 Shoes”

with one comment

I found a concept I introduced yesterday that I told you I was very fond of, so I’m running with it. Convertible shoes seem to be an upcoming trend for the future of footwear. Designers are assuming that a new need for multi-functionality is becoming more of a need or desire and these are a few of their reactions to this need. Designer of  Goodie 2 Shoes, Natalie Thorne has created a very futuristic looking shoe that has an adjustable heel. The height transition is made possible by… Read the rest of this entry »

NAT-2 Shoes

without comments

German shoe company Nat-2 has internationally patented created a multi-functional shoe, a 2 in 1 concept. The shoe starts as a Converse Chuck Taylor style and zips off into a sandal. The interchangeability of the shoe is endless when put in combination with all the different models. you can simply zip off one section and replace it with one from another model to create a new look each time. I am really into this concept of convertible shoes.

with one comment

Just found out about Droog a really cool Furniture brand from Amsterdam. Also check 2Modern.com a fancy furniture online store, where Droog can be found. Especially, pay close attention to this cool ‘ hanger lamp ‘ ( you can actually create it on your own ).

” Droog is an innovative enterprise based in Amsterdam. Set up in 1993 as a statement on design, it has developed the Droog mentality: creating innovative concepts that change perspective. Our products and projects connect with the individual, the user. They deal with slowness, memories, nostalgia, re-use, craftsmanship, nature. They generate experience, interaction, participation, products that are easily to comprehend, have meaning, tell stories; products that are meant to be cherished and not discarded without thought.”

Casey Brown Architecture – James-Robertson House

without comments

The Sydney-based team of Casey brown Architecture abides by principles of lying built form atop of the natural environment, and their house perched above the blue waters of the bay is no exception to the practice. For the James-Robertson House, the architects, who also live on the hillside, employed their local knowledge of climate and topography in the relationship between the natural and the tectonic.

Designer Boom Winner

with one comment

- Designer Boom contest Winner of “Dining in 2015 ” :A pretty cool idea designed by Italian Andrea Cingoli + Paolo emilio Bellisario + Cristian Cellini + Francesca Fontana, and its 100% bio…

Designer’s own words:
Turn your favorite office tool from your desk in a common cutlery…this is din-ink. A set of pen caps, including a fork-cap, a knife-cap and a spoon-cap, that replaces the normal pen cap during lunch time! All caps are made by annually renewable resources, like natural starch and fibers, to be 100% biodegradable and a toxic, warranting the best alimentary use. Dispensing each set in a compostable packaging the whole set is designed to respect the environment. Now give your office ballpoint pen a good excuse to be gnawed by your teeth: use them for din-ink.

Fendi Baguette

(From the pages of Vogue Dec 2007)

The classic ( well, classic because it’s been around for ten years now) Fendi Baguette is now available in white-canvas with a set of 48 Pantone markers and a logo-embossed wooden box to allow the buyer to color and decorate their Fendi anyway they choose.

This package goes for $5,500. The original Fendi Baguette goes for $2,720. So I guess a set of 48 Pantone markers (which can be found for less than $120) and the logo-embossed box ( it’s a box ,c’mon!) jacks the price up $2,780.

Henk Hofstra created an urban river in Drachten, The Netherlands. His “Blue Road” installation features 1000 meters of a blue painted road and the phrase ” Water is Life” written in eight-meter-high letters across it. The Blue Road is reminscent of the waterway that used to be where the road is now. A memorial to nature, it is an intriguing artistic gesture to reinforce the street as a space and place. Keep checking Google Earth to see if it will show up on the map.

koji-iijima flier koji Lijima

KAZUO hq, a fashion line representative of global consciousness, presents Koji Lijima’s newest art collection, “Between an Emergency and Daily Life” at the KAZUO hq gallery. Koji Lijima’s art installation and performance attempts to connect western notions like globalization and identity with eastern sentiments such as the traditional basic elements of earth and fire. The artist builds and battles lare metal sculptures of dogs that release flame from their mouths and a giant turtle that shoots egg bombs. When asked to describe his steel boar missile, Koji replied “A wild boar is a stubborn and stiff animal, it never listens to reason. This work is an obvious metaphor that represents Americans political and military facets. The boar, when provoked, charges head first in it’s century old obdurate path.”
The opening party is December 1rst, 2007 from 6pm -10pm.

Zevs’ Liquidated Logos

without comments

zevs2.jpg
An anonymous French street artist who was amongst those who pioneered the French street scene, Zevs began his work in the early ’90s as a tagger. By the end of the ’90s, he was most known for his poetic drawings of shadows in Paris, as well as “bombing” models on billboards between the eyes. In 2002, he cut out a model of a Lavazza-poster at Alexanderplatz in Berlin, and above the hole in the poster he wrote : “VISUAL KIDNAPPING-PAY NOW!”His intervention caused a stir amongst art lovers and people in Berlin. (Stealing an image from a poster in Germany is now spoken as visual kidnapping.) Zevs has also been doing what he calls ‘proper graffiti’ for many years, where he writes on dirty walls with a high pressure jet.
Currently, he has his first solo exhibit in London, at the Lazarides gallery called “Liquidated Logos.”

Started by Carly Margolis and Ophir Tanz, Cavern was a life-long dream by two design-oriented friends who saw a need for an industry renaissance in interior design. The two aim to bring abstracted natural elemnts into urban spaces, and the designs are all inspired from the natural world and clean lines of mid-century modern architecture. At the top is the Cavalry wallpaper. From afar, it looks very graphic and stylized. However, the pattern seen is actually 2 mirrored horse heads.

Fulton Fence – Put some colors in your city

without comments

The Fulton Fence is a temporary installation in Fulton Street, New York City on view from Nov. 14, 2007 through the spring 2008.
They wants to affect the cities developments, especially what they call Visual Polution due to the construction sites… Good Idea ! And if this is a next step to a better graphic future ?!

Manolo Blahnik Receives Honorary CBE from Queen Elizabeth II

The designer with Cultural Secretary James Purnell

Queen Elizabeth II bestowed upon designer Manolo Blahnik Honorary Commander of the British Empire, cementing his iconic status forever. The award was presented by Culture Secretary James Purnell and acknowledges him as one of the most successful and influential designers of our time.

“It is the greatest privilege to have been appointed by Her Majesty the Queen to receive such an honour for my small contribution to the fashion industry in Britain,” said Blahnik. “I’ll always be proud and grateful for it.”

Commander of the British Empire? I totally dig that job.

Commuun Duo

Japanese and Paris based duo Kaito Hori ( from Balenciaga) and Iku Furduate ( Central St. Martins) are on the fashion radar. Their spring line is structurally strong, where they use “picot,” a dated form of edging where thread is sewn in zigags to allow movement and fluidity. Since their launch in 2005, Commuun Duo has already won an LVMH award for ANDAM 2007. Think Future Classics.

Anyone catch the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show last night? Some of it was pretty hot. What caught my eye though, more than the hot models in sexy lingerie, was their shoes. AMAZING! Are these custom made?

My Favorite: The Fendi B. Bag

As much as we want ( some may say need) those shoes or purses, the reality is that for some of us we can’t always have every fashion accessory we may think we need. The clever people at Bag Borrow or Steal found a way to give people the opportunity to own/borrow these items!

The monthly membership can be as low as $5/year and you can pretty much borrow anything for as long as you want. You can also borrow items as a guest, but it’s definitely cheaper to register as a member. Each item is priced differently though. The red vintage Chanel purse shown above can be borrowed at $289/week or $850 a month. Or the Fendi purse ( which I personally love even more in blue patent leather) goes for $80/week or $235/month. Sometimes, if you develop a relationship with your item and just cannot give it up, you have the option of “stealing,” which really means you get to buy it for a negotiated price.

Marc Jacobs: Love Him or Leave Him

without comments

marc.jpg

At Cyana Lab,we’ll be looking at pics of Marc online and at his last show and we’re thinking ” What happened to Marc?” The change in his physical appearance has left most of us confused. Gone are the days where MJ wore oversized clothes, had long greasy hair, wore big glasses all because he hated how he looked. Nowadays, he’s got a new, hard gym body to showcase his new tan.

Seems he’s pretty aware of the all speculation. After reading the NY Times article, it seems like he doesn’t care what others think. Ultimately what makes him successful is that he’s gonna do what he wants to do. Or it may be because, as confessed by Jacobs,” In the most basic way I can say it,” he said, re-lighting a cigarette, “coming from a psychological place, what I love more than anything is attention. That is about as honest of a statement that I could possibly make. I want a reaction, because I want the attention.”

Dollface, Expressing the Futility of Vanity.

with one comment

The detail and expression in Andy Huang’s Dollface animation is done amazingly. The subtle details embellish the angst of achieving aesthetic perfection in a robotic following of mainstream media.Andy’s works have also been displayed around the world including the Smithsonian National Gallery of Art. We look forward to his future projects.

Restroom anyone ?!

without comments

Believe it or not, the humble bathroom/restroom is the new mecca for design. All over the world leading designers are transforming aesthetically pleasing places for people to pee, pooh and, well, be pampered, all in the name of making the daily commute to the restroom a little less dreary.  I always loved the restroom / toilets design – kinda kinky ;) -Open your eyes every time you going to fancy clubs, restaurant and Hotels…

Michel Gondry Does RAZR 2 Commercial

without comments

Charming, theatrical, eccentric…Michel Gondry’s spot for the RAZR 2 is delightful. Earlier in 2007, Motorola had Gondry create a commercial for the phone. Unfortunately it was never aired (probably because it was too cool). The commercial is still very accessible in a Target commercial type of way, but you can see Gondry’s stylish visionary directive.

I kinda feel like the actress is going to bust out singing Human Behavior.

The Crazy Robertson

without comments

jermyn.jpg jermyn2.jpg

John Wesley Jermyne

Inspiration comes from all walks of life, and in LA it’s poignant that the newest trend doesn’t stem from a celebrity but from a 56-year-old homeless man. John Wesley Jermyn has been a street nomad for 20 years, and is considered a cultural staple on Robertson Blvd, home to Kitson ala celebrities and paparazzi. This derelict inspiration has created a new clothing line called “The Crazy Robertson.” With all seriousness, we LOVE THIS GUY! His whole look, it just WORKS! But I cant say the same about the new t-shirt line that has used this trademark of LA as a marketing tool more than an inspiration. I was excited to read about it in the Wall Street Journal, but nevertheless disappointed by the execution. All of these t-shirt lines popping up left and right are the reason that LA fashion reputation is hurting. One could take Mr. Jermyn’s image and develop a concept that translates into something far more sophisticated and interesting, but i guess thats not where most Angelenos interests lie.

Maybe you weren’t in LA when the Lichtenberg pop-up store began at New High Mart. The opening party was a success, but more importantly this bold experiment in retail marketing is taking off, especially with the recent Paper Magazine 24 Hour Pop up store.

Reverse Graffiti Artist: Alexandre Orion

without comments

Reverse graffiti artist is an interesting concept, considering that “Graffiti is the name for images or lettering scratched, scrawled, painted or any form of marking on property. Graffiti is often regarded by others as unsightly damage or unwanted vandalism.” ( Wikipedia) However, Alexandre Orion scours the streets of Sao Paulo in an effort to clean city property. This was a two week project where the artist selectively scrubbed soot from a tunnelto create an image of a cemetary of skulls, which represent his The skulls belong all to us. I wanted to bring a catacomb from the near future to the present, to show people that the tragedy of pollution is happening right now. I try to remind people of things they are trying to forget.”
Though he his “cleaning up,” the police are not the most cooperative and has been held up by gunpoint several times.

North Face?!!

without comments

northface2.pngnorthface.png

Normally North Face doesn’t really represent the type of fashion we love at Cyana Lab. North Face is known for the durability and warmth of their clothes, but not so much the design. However, when I visited North Face, I was impressed with their new fall collection for men and women. I absolutely love their dark, gun-metal gray colors, and their sleeker, more sophisticated designs. You don’t have to be cold to look dope.

“The prophet of Futurism” , as he has been referred to, Thierry Mugler is an instinctive designer who never looks for inspiration. According to Thierry Mugler, “intellect is the servant of the spirit.”

He strongly feels that his clothing is modernistic and not futuristic. Clothes of today should have nothing to do with the past. They should create elegance with simple form and structure and add defined shape to the body, volume, form and simplicity.

Paper Magazine: 23 Hours to Go

without comments

Part 1 & 2
A huge trend has risen lately in fashion; The Pop-Up Store. We have been following some of the freshest brands and Collectives popping-up in NY, LA, and London. what a better thing to do when you are visitng a place but throw together a store/ambiance where you can invite and host the people interested in your work. Paper Magazine hasnow taken it to another level. One hour ago I was at the launching of the 24 hour department store installation by Paper Magazine. what a brilliant idea and execution. I have been keeping an eye on their progress all week. They started setting up Monday to be ready by Tonight. i wanted to get there at exactly 6pm to see what it would be like outside, and as I predicted the line was growing fast and people were inpatient. I ran in to snap some pics and tell you guys all about it right away. the energy was great and the exhibitors were awesome. i cant wait to go back in the middle of the night to see what they are up to. Inside you will find exhibitors including Screaming Mimi’s, Opening Ceremony, Citizen-Citizen and many more.

Part 3 & 4

Roberto Cavalli Collection for H&M Launched Today and Sold Out in One Hour..

cavalli.jpg

So today was the launch of the Roberto Cavalli Collection for H&M. His 20 Mens looks and 25 womens looks were available at 200 selected H&M stores worldwide. But as predicted it only took one hour for everything to disappear from the floor. People were stripping the mannequins to get their hands on whatever animal print they could get. It was a huge success! We love to see how icons such as Madonna, Lagerfeld, Voctor and Rolf, and now Cavalli are translating their genius into the commercial genius of none other than H&M. Thank god for the fashion FANATICS!

The Next Generation of Legos

without comments

legos.png

Designer Jin Woo Han’s idea was to recreate autonomous interactivity between people and demonstrated this in the form of electric legos. The main circuit board performs two functions – to build upon the notch and to conduct electricity. The possibilities are endless. In this Simpsons’ example done by the artist, Marge and Homer will begin talking to each other. When you add Bart to the mix, he will be recognized and the conversation will change. If there is a t.v. in the setting, the toys will comment on what is showing.

I love the eyes on the Simpson’s lego pieces!

Right now is the time to indulge in the extra-small purse. Realistically, nothing will really fit inside except an ID, a credit card, and chapstick. However, they are too cute to pass up. The teeny purse is perfect to accent any outfit, or to wear alongside your over-sized purse.
