Hedi Slimane Solo Exhibit
Hedi Slimane, the man who used to head Dior Homme, but more importantly, the man whose razor-thin black suits revolutionized menswear, is now heading his own photography exhibit “Perfect Stranger.” His exhibit opened yesterday in Paris at Galerie Almine Rech and will feature Hedi’s explorations with “vaporous abstractions.”
To see more on what Hedi Slimane will be doing in the future, check out this Hint Mag interview.
Fendi Baguette
(From the pages of Vogue Dec 2007)
The classic ( well, classic because it’s been around for ten years now) Fendi Baguette is now available in white-canvas with a set of 48 Pantone markers and a logo-embossed wooden box to allow the buyer to color and decorate their Fendi anyway they choose.
This package goes for $5,500. The original Fendi Baguette goes for $2,720. So I guess a set of 48 Pantone markers (which can be found for less than $120) and the logo-embossed box ( it’s a box ,c’mon!) jacks the price up $2,780.
Derrick Santini
Derrick Santini’s portfolio reaches fashion, music, art, and advertising. His belief that “you have to make a statement” is apparent in his work. His signature lighting is achieved predominantly without flash because he loves daylight but “you have to find the beauty in darkness too.” Derrick has worked with several rock and rap heavyweights such as Iggy Pop, Queens of the Stone Age, Muse, Lil Kim and Lily Allen.
Fashion Illustration by Cavalli
These are the sketches by Roberto Cavalli for the Spice Girls World Tour. An updated though still reminiscent look.
Coopa Roca
Each country has their own people dedicated to a tradition of technique and craftsmanship. Coopa-Roca, a community outreach program in fashion based in Rio Janeiro, Brazil, was founded in 1981 to provide and improve safe working conditions for it’s members who are living in Rocinha, to work from home, and thus be able to contribute to family survival without neglecting their familial duties.Coopa-Roca, which stands for the Handicraft and Sewing Cooperative of Rocinha Ltd, uses traditional Brasilian techniques such as embroidery, crochet, knitting, and patchwork. The cooperative has over 100 talented members, and has gained international reputation for the quality of their work and for being an exemplary socially inclusive project. The cooperative members have colloborated with top designers such as Carlos Miele. Banksy does New York (First Time!)
Cavern For Wallpaper and Interior Design
Started by Carly Margolis and Ophir Tanz, Cavern was a life-long dream by two design-oriented friends who saw a need for an industry renaissance in interior design. The two aim to bring abstracted natural elemnts into urban spaces, and the designs are all inspired from the natural world and clean lines of mid-century modern architecture. At the top is the Cavalry wallpaper. From afar, it looks very graphic and stylized. However, the pattern seen is actually 2 mirrored horse heads.

Melrose Graffiti
What I hate most about driving is that since I’m so focused on the road, alot of the time I’ll miss out on all the cool graffiti on the streets of LA. Melrose Avenue has served as a canvas for many street artists like Banksy and Shepard Fairey. Thanks to LAist for the photos, I hadn’t seen some of them yet!

Two-Faced Wooden Car
Vasily Lazarenko built himself a nice ride. The shell is a 1981 Opel but the exterior is all wood. It took him 1.5 years to build, and Lazarenko won’t admit how much it cost to build.
Style Icon: Anna Piaggi

Anna Piaggi is an Italian muse, writer, and style icon. She has written for Italian VOGUE and in the 1980s, the avante-garde magazine Vanity. In 2006 she confessed to owning 2865 dresses and 265 pairs of shoes, never wearing the same outfit twice. With her curled blue hair, cupid’s bow lips, fantastic hats, and elaborately bright style, she is unmistakable.
She’s been a great influence and friends in the fashion industry for over 50 years and she still rocks the most amazing, over-the-top outfits.
Louis Vuitton Xmas Window Display

Louis Vuitton held a contest a Central St. Martins for 2007 Christmas window display. The winning entry’s designs must feature the product and be compatible to the different store sizes of the LV windows around the world. Marcos Villalba and Christopher Lawson won with their Latitude 48,914/Longituude 02.286. Their idea was inspired by the area around Asnieres, where the original Vuitton workshop is based. The design was a topographical map, made from layers of Balsa wood. Latitude 48,914/Longituude 02.286 will be displayed in Paris, Hong Kong, and New York.
Iconic Photographs of the 20th Century,Recreated by Senior Citizens

Art Collective Henry VIII’s Wives restaged historic moments with the elderly in Glasglow, such as the killing of a Vietcong from the Vietnam war. The images for “Iconic Photographs of the 20th Century, Recreated by Senior Citizens,” represent a culural motif of our time, the representation that overshadows the event it documents.
Jason Salavon

In 2007, the Ikea book had over 175 million copies distributed globally and is thought to have surpassed the Bible as the most published print-work in the world. The above pictures are full-scale reproductions by Jason Salavon of an entire Ikea catalogue, leaving only the color and structure. Salavon is known for his reconfigurations of objects of mass material to present a new perspective.

Manolo Blahnik Receives Honorary CBE from Queen Elizabeth II

The designer with Cultural Secretary James Purnell
Queen Elizabeth II bestowed upon designer Manolo Blahnik Honorary Commander of the British Empire, cementing his iconic status forever. The award was presented by Culture Secretary James Purnell and acknowledges him as one of the most successful and influential designers of our time.
“It is the greatest privilege to have been appointed by Her Majesty the Queen to receive such an honour for my small contribution to the fashion industry in Britain,” said Blahnik. “I’ll always be proud and grateful for it.”
Commander of the British Empire? I totally dig that job.
Bird Bath Induction Recharge Device

Designer Sun Kyung Kim created created a bird bath that recharges your cellphone. Your battery level is indicated by the electric water ripples.
Skull Installations

I really enjoy artist Laura Keeble’s sense of humor. On closing night for Damien Hirst exhibit at the White Cube Mason’s yard, his diamond skull For the Love of God was being gingerly put away by gallery staff. Laura Keeble took it upon herself to pay homage to the artist, by recreating his skull and then chucking it in front of the gallery steps.
The Damien Hirst Skull is composed of platinum, diamond, and human teeth. The skull has 8,601 diamonds and 1,106.18 carats. It is the most expensive piece of art ever created, costing $16 to $20 million to make, and $99 million to buy. ( $99 million?!)

Russia Watch on Andrey Bartenev
Andrey Bartenev ’s installation Connection Lost is a glass tunnel, with fifty LED spheres with the words Connection Lost circling in their orbit. A heart inside each sphere symbolizes the potential frustration in the world of virtual connections. At the same time, the very message about lost connections, continues to multiply and reproduces itself with LED letters and mirrors. On the surface, the stage is captivating. With the lights and music mixed together, there is a sense of false happiness. It is a metaphor for the simulative communities that exist to give to give continued hope to a chance of an encounter.
Animation Again – Drawing
Dollface, Expressing the Futility of Vanity.
The detail and expression in Andy Huang’s Dollface animation is done amazingly. The subtle details embellish the angst of achieving aesthetic perfection in a robotic following of mainstream media.Andy’s works have also been displayed around the world including the Smithsonian National Gallery of Art. We look forward to his future projects.
Michel Gondry Does RAZR 2 Commercial
Charming, theatrical, eccentric…Michel Gondry’s spot for the RAZR 2 is delightful. Earlier in 2007, Motorola had Gondry create a commercial for the phone. Unfortunately it was never aired (probably because it was too cool). The commercial is still very accessible in a Target commercial type of way, but you can see Gondry’s stylish visionary directive.
I kinda feel like the actress is going to bust out singing Human Behavior.
Reverse Graffiti Artist: Alexandre Orion
Reverse graffiti artist is an interesting concept, considering that “Graffiti is the name for images or lettering scratched, scrawled, painted or any form of marking on property. Graffiti is often regarded by others as unsightly damage or unwanted vandalism.” ( Wikipedia) However, Alexandre Orion scours the streets of Sao Paulo in an effort to clean city property. This was a two week project where the artist selectively scrubbed soot from a tunnelto create an image of a cemetary of skulls, which represent his The skulls belong all to us. I wanted to bring a catacomb from the near future to the present, to show people that the tragedy of pollution is happening right now. I try to remind people of things they are trying to forget.”
Though he his “cleaning up,” the police are not the most cooperative and has been held up by gunpoint several times.

Thierry Mugler : 2007
“The prophet of Futurism” , as he has been referred to, Thierry Mugler is an instinctive designer who never looks for inspiration. According to Thierry Mugler, “intellect is the servant of the spirit.”
He strongly feels that his clothing is modernistic and not futuristic. Clothes of today should have nothing to do with the past. They should create elegance with simple form and structure and add defined shape to the body, volume, form and simplicity.

The Next Generation of Legos

Designer Jin Woo Han’s idea was to recreate autonomous interactivity between people and demonstrated this in the form of electric legos. The main circuit board performs two functions – to build upon the notch and to conduct electricity. The possibilities are endless. In this Simpsons’ example done by the artist, Marge and Homer will begin talking to each other. When you add Bart to the mix, he will be recognized and the conversation will change. If there is a t.v. in the setting, the toys will comment on what is showing.
I love the eyes on the Simpson’s lego pieces!
Banksy Unmasked in London

© Murakami
The MOCA Museum had their opening party for © Murakami. Takashi Murakami held a press review and briefly spoke of commerce and the fact that money is important. His ability to take Japanese anime and manga concepts and create pieces of fine art made way for his collaboration with Louis Vuitton. The opening party was packed ( Pharrel Williams and Kanye West were seen heading to the VIP area!) and there was a long line of people waiting to enter the Louis Vuitton store, now open at the MOCA!!! This is the first time Louis Vuitton has done something like this, and it reflects how well-regarded Murakami has become.
Make-up Trends
We girls love wearing makeup don’t we? This fall, we suggest you experiment with some new looks.

The first is our day-look. Instead of dewy foundations, try the matte look that was seen on FW ‘07 runways. The most important details for this look is a matte foundation, nude lips, and a light blush across the cheeks.
For a night look, face painting will have you standout, especially against all those doing the “smoky-eye.” This look, called the “Electric Fade,” will highlight your cheekbones and eyes. Don’t be afraid to use color;it’s alot of fun and adds a new, unique dimension to your entire outfit. To really add a final impact, wear fake-eyelashes.Both looks were created by Glitz Beverly Hills Salon, located on 9867 S. Santa Monica Blvd., LA CA.

If It Was Possible To Love Radiohead Even More

Radiohead has always done as they please, and their new album, “In Rainbows”, is no exception. I’m sure you fans all know that they have chosen to not sign with an album and to release their album via their webpage, which means to all us lucky fans that we can choose to pay whatever we want per song! fashion Illustration to die for

I’ve always had a weak spot for fashion illustrations, probably because it was one of the ways i wished most i could express my fashion sense, and I could not. The images above are 1960’s illustrations of Jean-Claude Picard which I adore.

Gabriel Mendes Gets Me Again and Again
It’s hard to manifest in my words the power and layers of documentation that Gabriel Mendes achieves in his photos. He has been exploring this concept of street art and street profiles for more than 3 years and his photos feel more and more alive as this project continues to come together. This photograph made me gasp! Brazilian model Raika, styled for this street profile in queens right near PS1 Contemporary Art Musuem is approached by these two archival characters of our time. “Where did they come from” i kept asking, I cant imagine a more perfect visual brew. So fucking rock roll its almost ridiculous. I mean the hair, the vests, the skinny as hell jailbreaker and plaid pants (pants,no, leggings!), the boom box , the arts and crafts Chanel rebel skateboard, the cigarettes and THE FUCKING ATTITUDE! Someone throw me a freakin’ bone here.

Bulgaria Magazine…
Just got my eyes on this epic publication. Bulgaria Magazine is from Finland and has nothing to do with Bulgaria. Something about that feels weird, its like someone just came in, took my identity, patented it and then redefined it. hmmm. not really sure how i should feel, except for the fact that this magazine is one of the sickest printed visual explotions i have ever seen. props and kudos! be sure to check them out at their website and hit up their myspace.
Beyond Fashion…

Following the work of Henrik Vibskov has been a great inspiration for me.
Whenever I am feeling discouraged by the lack of ideas and presence of
new designers I turn to the Virtual World of Henrik Vibskov. The image
above is from an installation called “LAND OF BLACK CARROTS”. It was
built for the exhibition of his AW0708 Collection in Paris at Galerie Richard.
Henrik is able to add a dimention of fantasy to his design that pulls the viewers
into a world he has created. The clothing is just an accessory to that fantasy.
